So, I've been posting lots. Lots for me anyway. And now I am posting about
politics it's crazy... blame
skadi...
I am remembering the real reason I started avoiding political stuff...wasn't because I didn't care. It was because I did.
So, right, the point.
I read USA Today this morning in the dining hall. Front and back of the same page, I read two articles.
One was about "Media soul-searching after Bush's victory"
It includes the happy information that more people get their information from Fox news than any other TV source, by a lot.
and it seems that
"... it's no secret that many people in the national media, perhaps a bit too willingly, believed preliminary exit polls that showed John Kerry was headed to the White House.
[what does that mean? too willingly it was a really close election that could easily have been interpreted either way at that point, right] But when Bush subsequently won —
and religion and morality ranked high among concerns of voters — it set off a chain of soul-searching in big-city newsrooms, especially in the media epicenter, New York."
Yes. What we need is more religion and morality in our news sources to make them less subjective and biased. Wow, how could we crazy New York liberals have missed that?
The
other, more innocent looking one, was about controversy over showing "Saving Private Ryan" because the FCC has been cracking down.
It concluded...
"Meanwhile, as the Ryan uproar was unfolding, Jerry Falwell, 71, announced the formation of a new group that wants to "keep the momentum" going in the wake of the success of the 'values voter.' The Faith and Values Coalition is 'a 21st century resurrection of the Moral Majority,' Falwell says in a posting at
www.falwell.com. The Moral Majority, popular in the '70s, was influential in helping put Ronald Reagan in the White House.
The coalition, he says, will be 'enlisting and training millions of Americans to become partners in this exciting task of
bringing this nation back to the moral values of faith and family on which it was founded.'"
Ok. I can understand that gay marriage, stem-cell research, abortions etc. are things people have
opinions about. I believe that those who disagree with me are wrong and that I am right, but I don't think there's a definite right and wrong (side note: yes, that's a whole big issue, moral objectivism, and it isn’t really my point. To see a debate about it, including what I think [and if you feel the need to, you can contribute even though the post is old] go look at Justin's journal
here) But right...these are debatable issues.
But.
This country was
not founded on "moral values of faith and family"--It just wasn't. I mean according to our recorded history (also slightly off topic would be a good old-fashioned "history is bunk " debate.) Kind of the opposite actually. Most pilgrims came here to have freedom of religion, to go to a place where the state
did not try to dictate over their faith. And then there's that whole "All men are created equal" etc etc idea this country was founded on. And since "family values" to Jerry Falwell means denying roughly 10% of the population rights that the other 90(ish)% of the country (over 18, varying based on state) can take for granted. Yes, you may too young to get married, but you will grow older. Denying the...137? legal rights granted by marriage to 1/10th of the country is not treating all people equally, it is not allowing them liberty or the pursuit of happiness.
So yea. That would be sort of the exact opposite. I am not a history, law, or poli-sci person. If you are, and want to help me out with this or show me how I’m wrong go ahead.
I guess I am underneath my pessimism and apathy someone who really does believe that there is some justice, some regulation. That people can't just...lie...in a newspaper and it's ok. It isn't okay! How can this be allowed?
I hate how much this gets to me. I hate that since two weeks ago I have been miserable because of a stupid fucking election. But every time I read or hear something like this, my stomach sinks and I want to cry. I just...I can't believe how much people can hate, put a good name on it, and get it printed like it's just fine. It isn't. Debatable issues aside, spin, etc. this is just a lie. A lie in a national newspaper that people will read and believe. And feel good about. Because "moral values of faith and family" sounds much better than "gay-hating" or "forcing ideas from religious beliefs onto people not of that religion, or who don't interpret that religion that way."
I'm sorry. I’m not as articulate about this as Dustin and Sarah. And Keith. I don't post this kind of thing. but Sarah told me to. And this is what is going on in my life now, because this is what is making me cry right now.
